Review of Yalbury & Yvon’s in Dorchester

Yalbury & Yvon’s Cafe & Wine Bar (just off Brewery Square Dorchester) is a mix of the best of Dorset’s produce combined with artisan French pastries and has become a popular day time cafe. They also open in the evenings for dinner from 18:30 and on Thursday evenings you can enjoy their cheese & wine evening, from 17:30 to 20:30.

Lets elaborate on exactly what the cheese & wine evening is all about. The wine is selected by Mark Banham (Morrish & Banham wine merchants) and you can buy it by the glass or by the bottle (Soft drinks are also available).

The food is prepared by owner Jamie Jones and is called the bruschetta bar, the selection of food is suitable for vegetarians, vegans, gluten free and dairy free. Bursting full of fresh & vibrant Mediterranean colours & flavours. There are no fancy dressings or mayonnaise, just the fantastic produce shining through. Jamie just loves preparing this style of food and said that the selection will vary each week, mostly Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired dishes.

How it works: You are given a plate which you load up from the bar and then comes the drama, the melted cheese is poured over the top. The cheese is Ogle Shield and made by Longman’s Cheese (just north of Yeovil) and is melted on a Raclette machine. Don’t be put off with the strong smell of cheese, the actual flavour is very mild and very creamy. Each plate costs just £5.00, which is an amazing price for such excellent food.

We also ordered a side of sauté potatoes with chorizo & cheese, another absolute bargain at only £3.50 and enough for two.

We only managed two plates, but that is the beauty of this style of eating you can have as many plates as you like, its your own tapas meal on a plate. Then came the ordeal of having to decide which beautiful French pastry to have – we were guided through them all by Toby and in the end we chose the moist gluten free tiramisu and my favourite the lemon curd tart.

WOW I just love this style of eating, relaxed, fantastic food, delicious wine and a great buzz, especially as the cheese is melting onto your plate – we have already planned our return trip.. This is by far the best food I have eaten in a restaurant in Brewery Square and what makes this even better, it is all local – honestly you need to try this….
