It was Thursday morning when I noticed one of Brett’s tweets announcing that he had a room free for Saturday night. For once there was nothing planned for the weekend and after a flurry of correspondence with Brett, I had booked it! He has an amazing deal, one nights B&B for two with a 10 (yes 10) course taster meal for currently for only £160.00.. It may seem a lot, but considering Brett & his team have won every award going for their food, plus they are in the top 50 Gastro Pubs in the UK – it’s an absolute bargain.
We arrived early Saturday evening to the warmest of welcomes from both Brett & his wife Kelly (Landlady, bookkeeper, accountant, boss, housekeeper, friend, daughter but most importantly a mother to 2 gorgeous boys and wife to the fantastic Brett Sutton (quote from her Twitter account)) Our room was one of only three that they have, it was perfect, beautifully decorated, fresh and very, very clean.
Embarrassingly we hadn’t visited The White Post since 2014, it has now matured, feels confident with the air of a fine gastro pub. We relaxed into one of their large leather sofas, where we enjoyed an aperitif and selected a rather fine bottle of Merlot. (you can have drinks flight with the Taster Menu if you prefer) But it wasn’t until we were shown to our table and viewed the arsenal of cutlery, that we realised just how much we were about to eat…
We started with an amuse bouche of smokey flavoured parsnip velouté and then a rich chicken liver parfait. Then we enjoyed a dish of firm hake with peas, curry and scraps, it had the flavours of a traditional take-away fish & chips, but a very much delicate tastier version – I think this was my favourite dish of the night.
Followed by scallop baked in it’s shell, with fennel salami and wild garlic butter. I had forgotten just how sweet a really well cooked Lyme Bay scallop tastes, which made this my favourite dish of the night.
By now the restaurant was packed and it was wonderful to watch people’s faces light up as the food was served, quickly followed by lots of oohs and ahhs. We were sat next to a couple who were down from London for the night, they thought it was all totally amazing, especially the bargain price compared to home.
We then enjoyed carrots cooked/pickled/bhaji, served with a nice fresh tart curd, topped with a peanut Dukkah – I think this was my favourite dish of the night. Followed closely by my favourite dish of the night, 45day matured beef with textures of onions – the beef was melt in your mouth – stunning.
We were now onto desserts, apple cake, sea salted thyme caramel and vanilla ice cream. I don’t usually have desserts, but I was glad I did, it was full of tangy apple with a light soft sponge and creamy ice cream – made this my favourite dish of the night.
The Tropical fruit trifle was bursting with flavours of mango, pineapple, passion fruit and a light, crisp coconut meringue – I think this was my favourite dish of the night.
Then followed a board of regional cheeses with damson jelly – a creamy local Cheddar, rich goats cheese, a beautifully ripe soft cheese and a full flavoured soft blue from the Isle of Wight – I do love cheese and I think this was my favourite dish of the night.
We were done and we had enjoyed every mouthful working our way through this volley of excellent dishes, thankfully the portion sizes of each dish was just right, although we did feel rather full..! So we relaxed back into the sofa to finish off with a coffee & treats.
After a very good nights sleep, I was now surprisingly hungry and looking forward to a White Post hearty breakfast. I wasn’t disappointed, as you can see it certainly was a hearty breakfast, awesome sausage and the black pudding was divine.
What a wonderful night away, Brett & Kelly were superb hosts and I’m 100% sure we will return to enjoy their food again in the future, wouldn’t it be amazing to see you there too….
