“I don’t understand why vegans eat food that looks like meat?”
A totally reasonable question and one that I’ve been asked a few times already.
I mean, if we don’t agree with eating animals or the products of animals why would we want to eat something that reminds us of it?
For me, it’s mostly ease. When you’re used to making meals like spaghetti bolognese or having a dollop of yoghurt with your fruit, it would be weird to go ‘cold turkey’ and try to replace all these familiar foods with celery. Once I got used to changing up my cooking style and I restocked the cupboard with chickpeas and nutritional yeast then I came to rely on Quorn a lot less.
That’s why ice cream is such a weird one.
I’m not tempted to eat it, I don’t want to eat it because I don’t have the desire to consume its primary ingredient. But watching my partner eat an ice cream everyday on holiday made me sad. Kind of. It’s a confusing mix of feelings, I won’t lie.
In the UK, we’re lucky to have a lot of dairy alternative goodies including chocolate, yoghurt, cream, custard and ice cream too but I think it’ll be a little while before there are as many soya versions of Ben & Jerry’s as ‘cow juice’ (as I refer to it).
So after a week of this holiday ice cream torture, my heart skipped a beat to discover that Giggi’s ice cream shop (two doors down from my place of work) has three vegan ice creams on rotation! What’s more on my first visit they had my favourite mint choc chip. I was so confused by its creaminess I had to politely ask the server to look over the ingredients list just to double check.
Giggi Gelateria is owned by Luigi (Giggi) Bray who explains that ice cream was a way of life for him and his family back in Italy (as I someday wish mine to be). They have three locations listed on their website – the Burlington Arcade in Bournemouth, High Street in Poole and a kiosk in Swanage which means my fellow vegans can indulge themselves in dairyless treats across Dorset!
I’d also like to give a shout out to the lovely chaps who opened the Lollipop Gelato Lab in the triangle a year or so ago. I’ve heard they also have some vegan flavours but I’ve yet to try them. My last visit as a non-vegan was both tasty and entertaining so it’s definitely another one for the list.
For those who have read my first couple of posts for The Foodie Feed, I’d like to assure you that I do occasionally make healthy choices eating out. It’s not all pizza and burgers and ice-cream. But when you rediscover these naughty offerings as a vegan, It’s kind of exciting!
