Review of Taj Mahal in Westbourne

Review of the Taj Mahal in Westbourne

Like many of us, when ordering an Indian takeaway, I tend to stick with my unadventurous ‘Chicken Kurma and Peshwari naan’ but after visiting an Indian tasting menu restaurant in March (when on holiday), I really opened my mind and my taste buds to the wealth of new flavours I had been denying myself. So when I was invited to the Taj Mahal in Westbourne, I was excited!

Review of the Taj Mahal in Westbourne

Bournemouth’s first Indian restaurant, The Taj Mahal is now multi-award winning, with their Head Chef having won a prestigious national Currylife Award in 2016 and the restaurant winning ‘Best Curry House in Dorset’ in the 2017 Euro Asia Curry Awards. Nestled at one end of the bustling Westbourne high street, the Taj Mahal is decked out with a traditional Curry House decor, a very welcoming and cosy atmosphere and the owner, Mohammed Rahmen, was wonderfully friendly.

The menu is large with a range of familiar dishes, as well as plenty of Chef’s specialities. Eager to try, I was fortunate to be visiting with my husband and his brother, both seasoned curry eaters, so between us, we managed to share a range of dishes! After some poppadoms and condiments, we were treated to a range of starters to try, including some onion bahjis, spiced lamb kebabs, tandoori chicken and fried mushrooms.

For main, we shared an array of different dishes including their popular Tawa dish which is a mild and tasty curry topped with melted cheese (this was really delicious on a bit of naan bread!) and Mougle Delight which was a fab spiced, meatball dish. Their Bhuna Masala is listed in their menu as a ‘beautiful dish’ so we had to try it – and it really was (I’m not normally a fan of a Bhuna).

We had these with a range of sides and I have to say, I have never tasted a better naan. Normally I’m used to a heavy, stodgy bread, but these were so light and a joy to eat with all the flavours of the curries.

Taj Mahal also have a kids menu with some mild curries (as well as some non-Indian options if your child, like mine, is a little fussier!). They have some pre-set menu options to share as well as some lighter options with salads …and a dessert menu if you have any room left (which we didn’t).

Their well stocked bar will keep you refreshed all night and they have plenty of space to accommodate large groups, but I would recommend booking ahead to avoid missing out, especially at the weekend.

The Taj Mahal have an extensive takeaway menu and even their own free and easy to use app to make ordering (to collect or deliver) even easier – just download from the Apple app store or the Google play store for android users.

We all very much enjoyed tasting new and delicious Indian dishes and we all had a lovely time in the lovely atmosphere of the Taj Mahal in Westbourne. I would highly recommend if you are looking for a family friendly meal or a tasty takeaway.
