Review of Ojo Rojo in Bournemouth

I’ve been a fan of Ojo Rojo since before its doors opened in April last year.

It’s fair to say we like our food hot at home and alongside a couple of bags of fresh chillies you’ll find Sriracha, Frank’s, Tobasco, Chipotle Tobasco and my homemade red pepper sauce taking up valuable real estate in the fridge.

Without having a spicy Latino dining experience in Bournemouth before, I was so excited to try it for the first time. Now, a year on and firmly shopping from the plant-only menu, I was ready to se what they had on offer.

First up, a couple of words on the restaurant concept itself in case you haven’t been yet. It’s awesome. Customer service is some of the best – a warm welcome from the moment you walk in, super attentive bar service (I’d recommend making time for a pre-dinner cocktail) and friendly table service that basically aims to serve you before you need to ask for anything.

Really fun decor – neon signage, chunky wooden furniture I’d die to have in our dining room and you have to snoop upstairs to catch a glimpse of their beautifully intricate copper tree.

Now for the good stuff… vegans can rejoice in the knowledge that Ojo Rojo is another restaurant with a separate menu that you can browse freely.

We got a table at about 6.45 and so took advantage of their 25% off happy hour to sample some freshly made cocktails. Taken from the specials menu, I enjoyed a Coco Margarita and a Rhubarb & Pear Fizz.

For munch, we shared the Verde platter for two featuring pulled jackfruit tacos, cowboy bean tacos, patatas rojo, guacamole, salsa and tortillas. We also added some mouth-wateringly zesty Asparagus & Broccoli.

And though I’m not usually a pudding type, we took the Vegan Brownie for a spin – black bean, oats, agave syrup & cocoa.

And so in summary… If you’re vegan – go there. If you’re not vegan – go there.

And if you’re any other kind of eater not previously mentioned, you should try it out.
