Review of Lizzie Baking Bird’s Isolation Boxes

Lizzie (Crow) really doesn’t need any introduction if you are from the west of the county or you’re regular visitors to the Farmers Market and/or Food Festivals. Lizzie aka Baking Bird, is the one that cooks the most amazing rustic, gnarly, mouth watering, delicious, beautiful looking savoury and sweet pastries you will ever see or taste. All made in her cottage kitchen in Upwey, Weymouth, using local seasonal produce.

Just as self-isolation was kicking in, Lizzie advertised that she was about to start a food box delivery service, in and around the Weymouth/Dorchester areas. These are designed especially for those that are vulnerable, those who are self-isolating …and anyone who just loves Lizzie’s food!

The food boxes come in three sizes:-

The small box: perfect for one (just £8) has a small loaf (free), one sausage roll and one pasty or savoury tart, plus two cakes of your choice – brownie,  shortbread, sweet cake slice or cookie.

The medium box: perfect for two (just £14) has a medium loaf (free), two sausage rolls, two pasties or savoury tarts, plus four cakes of your choice.

The large box: perfect for three or more (just £20) has a large loaf (free), two sausage rolls, two pasties and two savoury tarts, plus four cakes of your choice.

Vegetarian substitutes are available, if required.

We have had four boxes delivered now and each one has been different, in a really good way. We have enjoyed three different breads, wholemeal mixed grain, rustic white and a seeded loaf.

The savoury tarts (quiche type tarts) can be tomato and ham or plain mushroom, it doesn’t really matter, they are all delicious and perfect for a lazy lunch.

The pasties have been traditional, then with mushrooms and this week a slice of beef pie. The sausage rolls are made with proper sausage meat and this week’s had apple and onion in them too.

The cakes also change weekly, so you never know what you will be enjoying with your morning cuppa, thankfully the fudgy, chocolatey brownies remain the same.

She has also enlisted the help of other local food producers; you can order through Lizzie… goodies from Langham Wine – for a bottle of fizz or two, Book and Bucket Cheese Company – for your farmhouse cheeses, Dorset Shellfish – for your seafood fix, From Dorset With Love – for chutneys & jams, Graingers – for general goods (fruit, veg, dairy, pasta, rice & flour etc.) and Howells – for fresh meat.

If you are self isolating or just a lover of great home cooking and fancy a treat, then check out Lizzie’s isolation boxes – please visit her website for more details www.lizziebakingbird.co.uk

PS> there’s no charge for delivery
