Having been lucky enough to have been invited to the launch of No.34 at The Orchid Hotel I can honestly say I will be going back.
The hotel itself has undergone a complete refurbishment since 2014, the end result is a new boutique style which sets it apart as the only hotel of its kind in Bournemouth. As soon as you walk in the contemporary furnishings, soft pallet and subtle lighting make you feel at ease and ready for a relaxing stay.
The restaurant itself has, until today, only been open to residents of the hotel but thankfully now locals can appreciate the fine food on offer prepared by Michelin-starred head chef Jean Gysemans. The menu provided me with so many choices I found it hard to decide so I encouraged my partner to order something different so we could taste as much of the menu as possible.
I opted for 1000 Leaves of Crab consisting of delicate layers of tomato, Dorset crab, guacamole and vanilla oil. I love that local produce is used in this menu and noticed the Asparagus starter was also sourced locally from Sopley Farm.
It is easy to see that the chef loves his work as not only are the dishes delicious they are a work of art and almost look to good to eat.
The Spanish Melbec a personal favourite was very easy to drink during our main courses of Duck Margret and the Chef’s Signature Hake, I’ll be sure to get a taxi next time as another glass really would of been lovely.
The Hake was beautifully moist and served on a Piperade Basquaise with Bayonne ham, the Duck was served pink and tender with Verbena sauce and a slightly too large if I’m honest portion of Rosti potatoes.
I really should of resisted the desserts but if you had seen what was coming out of the kitchen I don’t think you would of been able to either. Small change for me was sorbet instead of ice cream it’s a dairy thing and was dealt with easily by the waitress. The staff are very attentive but not overly so, they we’re aware of my dietary requirements when I was seated and pointed out potential issues on the menu.
The Orchid Hotel ranks as number 4 in Bournemouth on TripAdvisor and I am certain that once word gets out about the great quality food that No.34 serves it will be right up there with the best restaurants in Bournemouth too. Thanks again for a lovely evening we will definitely be back, I’m thinking Sunday lunch.
