Review of Loch Fyne – Canford Cliffs

Review of Loch Fyne in Canford Cliffs.

Loch Fyne opened its doors to the Canford Cliffs residents in 2005 and has been a popular venue ever since. Having undergone a ‘facelift’ earlier this year, I visited one evening in August with my mum to see what they had to offer….

The restaurant has an envious location. Just past the boutique high street of Canford Cliffs, it is a stone’s throw from Evening Hill, one of the most beautiful views of Poole Bay – and the gateway to ‘Millionaire’s Row’; otherwise known as Sandbanks.

It’s not a secret that I love love LOVE seafood. Whenever I eat out, my eyes (and tummy) are drawn to the fish dishes immediately. I love it ALL. Yes, I love a well-dressed crab and a succulent lobster (preferably Canadian; the best) but give me a pot of prawns, some winkles or even a crabstick and I’m a happy gal. BUT (yes there’s a BIG BUT) I just can’t stand oysters. Raw oysters are my nemesis and I have TRIED to like them. Several times. I just can’t. do. it.

I spoke of my plight to Loch Fyne’s manager, Tomas and our waiter for the evening, Fransisco – as I know their oysters are to die for.

Quick as a flash, Fransisco arrived with some tempura oysters, served with a sweet chilli dressing and topped with shards of chillis. Mind (and taste buds) BLOWN. I loved it – I ATE OYSTERS! I wholly recommend them tempura’d…

At the same time (it was great service throughout our evening) our drinks arrived. A gin and tonic for me – Tomas had recommended the Brockmans – with hints of blueberries, coriander and bitter-sweet Valencian orange peel it was wonderfully fruity and refreshing. Mum doesn’t drink so ordered a 0% alcohol Heineken from the impressive alcohol-free choice. We were ready for our starters!

Fransisco brought to our table my Scottish King Scallops – they are advertised on the menu with a cauliflower puree and crispy chorizo. Tomas had earlier explained that they would be served with an avocado purée instead – that didn’t put me off. They were perfectly sautéed, succulent, melt in the mouth. The crispy chorizo gave it that extra ‘zing’. Mum’s Chicken, Coconut and Kaffir lime terrine (with cherry tomatoes, soya beans and whipped avocado was beautifully presented (as were the scallops) and the terrine had a tangy, fruity taste.

Dressed Crab is my favourite – so I chose this for my main course, and replaced my potato salad with some twice-cooked chips (I’d spied some at the table next to me and couldn’t resist them!) it was delicious. Mum had the Goan Seafood Curry – with pollock, hake, king prawns, wilted spinach, toasted coconut and basmati rice. It was perfectly spiced and there was a more than generous portion of prawns and delicate fish.

I thoroughly enjoyed my crab, and, although I was comfortably full, I wanted to try a dessert from the summer menu. I have a sweet tooth, and had never heard of a ‘Popcorn Sundae’ before! With popcorn ice cream, popcorn and salted caramel sauce it was the finest finish to a fantastic evening.

Loch Fyne has a summer menu, but it is definitely not just a warmer months destination – after the recent refurb I can imagine a cosy seafood meal in the winter to warm my cockles (you’re lucky there’s only one seafood joke!)

If you love oysters, have oysters. If you enjoy a juicy cod with generous chips – you’ll find it at Loch Fyne. There’s a huge choice of other dishes; meat, pasta, vegetarian choices, tasters, starters and side dishes – whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed.
