Review of Dilli Haat in Westbourne

After a seriously delayed promise to go out for dinner with my friend Daniel, we were scouring Google for options before he stumbled across a new privately owned restaurant that opened its doors in May this year. Dilli Haat is the quaintest new Indian restaurant and takeaway option for dwellers and visitors of Westbourne alike.

Run by a charming and multi-talented couple (Garima & Arun) who offer the most attentive and personable service I’ve experienced in any restaurant in Bournemouth to date, Dilli Haat brings the rich and aromatic flavours of India to your table.

To kick off the night, we quenched our thirst with some refreshing Cobra beer. As I’m not a beer drinker myself, I usually go on what my partner recommends I’ll like but on this occasion I gambled and won.

A look over the menu provided us with comfort and excitement. Extremely reasonably priced and in my interest – something for everyone. They traditional curry selection includes Tikka Masala, Bhuna, Rogan Josh and many of the other classics while offering some that I was less familiar with such as the Tindaloo (4 chills on their heat scale). Other than the typical ‘creamy’ options such as Korma, most of the curry sauce recipes are vegan and you can choose vegetables as your ‘meat’. Both Garima and Arun are vegetarian so it was easy to explain my needs.

My dinner date Daniel is not a vegan so we reviewed the flavours of the restaurant from both perspectives. Daniel ordered Peshwari Naan and a Bhuna with chicken while I ordered Saag Aloo (one of my favourite spinach-based eats) and a vegetable Vindaloo – spicy or nothing, I say!

And so our verdict on the food…

My Vindaloo was hot enough to blow my socks off but still deliver a volcano of flavours underneath. Absolute heaven. Although I’m glad I didn’t get too ahead of myself and risk a Tindaloo.

Daniel described his choice as the perfect fusion of strong confident spices. Always did have a way with words.

The intimate space, dim lighting and smiling service made for a lovely evening setting and big windows facing out to Westbourne made for some interesting people watching too.

Dilli Haat is the couple’s first business and Garima took the time to explain to us the pride of being the only authentic Indian menu on offer to hungry customers. Other local alternatives that offer Indian menus are typically Bangladeshi and so onion and sugar features heavily in their recipes, whilst cooking from one mixed pot. Instead, the Dilli Haat chefs cook everything fresh and use naturally sweet ingredients in place of pastes and sugar such as cashews, fresh tomatoes, chilli and garlic – cooking key sauces in their own pots.

Since opening their doors earlier this year, business has been really busy and due to having a relatively small restaurant I would recommend calling ahead to book a table.

We’d like to thank the couple for a fab evening and for giving us some money off our bill as a treat too!
