Review of Catch of the Day in West Bay

“Never judge a book by its cover” – this was said to me recently when I dismissed a restaurant because of it’s appearance, once inside we enjoyed wonderful food, with excellent service. I had this in mind as I wandered over to investigate a wooden shed selling & cooking fresh fish. It is just across the road from the hustle & bustle of the West Bay Harbour walkway. It is all open air seating, with a covered area if a shower does wander along.

Review of Catch of the Day in West Bay

Catch of the Day is run by Chef Angie Heywood and the fish is prepared by Akka, who loves to talk about his seafaring adventures. The fish & shellfish are caught from their fishing boat Vicky-Anna, that is moored just opposite them. The fish on display were fresh, with bright eyes and gills. Today’s catch was cuttle fish, plaice, mackerel, Dover sole, whiting, crab & lobster.

You can buy to cook at home, but the better option is to allow Angie to prepare them for you. Her prices are very reasonable, where else can you buy turbot (when available) with chips & salad for £9.50…..!

While gazing at the wonderful crabs, the thought of a succulent crab sandwich entered my head, so I just had to order one. I was so glad I did, it was crammed full of fresh from the sea crab meat, with a little chopped parsley & a dash of lemon. I was very impressed and I can see my visits to West Bay will be on the increase to enjoy more of Angie’s cooking..

Update 2018

We finally found time to revisit Catch of the Day and was pleased to see Angie still conjuring up great seafood. They are now licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer with your food, but as you can see with all the crossings out we were a little late, so it really pays to get there early. Also good to see that the majority of the prices haven’t increased since last year. ** word of warning ** they don’t take credit cards, so please take enough cash with you.

My choice had to be local black bream with chips, mainly because it was the only fresh fish left!! Out came two generous fillets of beautiful fresh black bream, with chips and salad – a bargain at £9.50..

Vicky’s lovingly made goats cheese tart is the vegetarian option and was perfect for a light summers lunch.

If you like wonderful fresh seafood, at a great price, head to Catch of the Day and please tell them I sent you… Open Tuesday – Sunday 12-4pm throughout the summer…
