Review of Billy Winters Cafe in Weymouth
Billy Winters (the name of locally caught Weymouth Bay prawns) Diner Bar is the brain child of Nigel Bloxham, the owner and chef of the Crab House Cafe. Billy Winters is a place we have been meaning to visit since it opened last year, but never got round to it until today.
Billy Winters is a rustic/beach diner/bar sat right on the beach over looking Portland Harbour and is hugely popular with the wind surfers, kite surfers, kayakers and families. There was previously a basic style cafe in this converted pre-fab building, but it has had a complete ‘refurbishment’. Inside it is quirky to say the least, a multitude of mirrors hanging on plain wood walls! Plenty of brightly painted chairs, with plenty of chairs pointing out to sea, so you can enjoy the view! There is also a good seating area outside and this is were we headed.
The menu makes for good reading with a great mix of meat lovers favourites (chorizo banger roll, pulled beef buns or Chimichanga etc.). A good selection of vegetarian dishes (Halloumi burger, aubergine wrap, beetroot burger etc.), also few fish dishes and pizzas that are made freshly in their wood fired oven! We only dropped in for a lunchtime snack, so we ordered a beetroot burger, a halloumi burger and a portion of sweet potato crisps, to share.
Food did take a little while, but it was Bank Holiday Weekend and who cares when you have a view like we were enjoying.
The burger looked & tasted great, a vegetarian burger still with that satisfying burger WOW. In the bun there was also lime & mint yoghurt, which was a winning combination for me!! The sweet potato chips, where delicious, how they cook them so they are still crisp on the outside, I have no idea!
Billy Winters is now on our ‘what to do’ list, a leisurely walk along the Rodwell Trail, spot of lunch in Billy’s and back again – a perfect way to spend a few hours. ps> a billy bonus, it is also fully licensed!!
