Interview with the founders of From Dorset With Love

I did try in earnest to be creative with the title for this article. But I couldn’t. From Dorset with Love is the creation of Chrissy and Karl Regler. From chutney to jam to balsamic vinegars From Dorset with Love have created a brand and taste that stretches beyond the county.

Karl was kind enough to give an insight into the story behind these tasty jars of love…from Dorset……

Interview with the founders of From Dorset With Love

How long has From Dorset with Love been established? And how did it come about?
From Dorset With Love was started in 2010 so have just entered our 7th year of business. At the time Chrissy was training to be a Legal Executive at a local solicitors and had returned to work part-time after the birth of our second child Jensen. Chrissy had always made jams and chutneys with her mum for presents for friends and family and whilst sat in a local pub we noticed that the Real Ale Chutney on the menu was made using a rival brewers beer so we offered to make something new for them, using their own beer, and it just went on from there.

I have a background in music business and was helping at a local festival (End of the Road) so I suggested to Chrissy about doing a food stall at the festival serving homemade jam on toast etc. The organisers said the pitches were rather expensive so suggested we set up the festival farmers’ market and sell jars of products…so that’s what happened! We had 6 weeks to get everything up together and we haven’t stopped since!

Where can customers buy your products?
We currently have just over 50 stockists covering all corners of Dorset (with a few voids in between!) and also have a few fantastic outlets in London and abroad. We also supply Haskins Gardens Centres which has helped us get in to Sussex and Hampshire.

We do the occasional food show in the area but over the last few years have reduced these due to demand from stockists. From the start of From Dorset we intend to be more wholesale led.

What are your 5 Top Best Sellers?
Strawberry Jam (over 900 jars sold in the first half of 2017!); Dorsetshire Sauce; Pear & Walnut Chutney; Passion Fruit Curd; and Lemon Curd

What is the most unusual concoction you have made and did it feature with your other products?
The most unusual thing we have made is our Dorsetshire Sauce which is our take on Worcestershire Sauce. It took 18 months to develop and has a blend of 15 herbs and spices…it all paid off afterwards though as was awarded 3 Stars at the Great Taste Awards not long after it launched.

What next for From Dorset with Love?
For starters, this October we launch 3 products in to 60+ stores of a well known supermarket across Dorset and Hampshire which is massive for us. We’re having to get a whole new work system in place which includes the next level of accreditation for our kitchen. Off the back of this though we’ll be able to push our brand further afield…so who knows what will happen over the next year and where our products will be!

This won’t stop us being creative in the kitchen though. We launched our mayonnaises earlier this summer and plan to add a couple more flavours to this range as well as adding a couple more jams and chutneys to the range. We then have a few more products/ranges in development of which have been put on the back burner for a year or so since our rebrand in 2016. All I can say is we have an exciting future ahead of us!
