Review of Brasserie Blanc in Bournemouth

The Brasserie Blanc in Bournemouth opened its doors in the summer of 2017, with a lovely launch party and a visit from the Founder himself, Raymond Blanc. The chain of Brasserie Blanc restaurants originally launched in 1996 as Le Petit Blanc and now has 20 restaurants across England.

The Bournemouth restaurant is situated in the lovely Marriott Hotel on the cliff top just up from the BIC and main Pier in central Bournemouth. On a sunny day or warm evening, there is a lovely terrace with an uninterrupted view of blue sky and sea. I was invited to visit with my husband on a slightly cooler, autumnal evening in October to try their new Autumn/Winter menus and we were shown to a lovely table in their bustling restaurant.

The Brasserie Blanc restaurants are a combination of seasonal food, sourced from top producers and in their own words ‘real french food, close to home’. The Bournemouth restaurant is warm and welcoming and the staff who served us were very friendly and helpful. There is also a lovely bar area attached should you wish to arrive slightly early and enjoy an aperitif or a cocktail from their extensive cocktail menu.

The menu has some classic french dishes such as Moule Marinieres, Escargots, Coq au Vin, and their classic ‘BB’ cheese souffle, but they also have some different options which I was keen to explore. We started with their potted crab and a Moroccan Mezze platter (full of falafel, harissa aubergine, artichoke, hummus and salads) to start. We then followed that with a steak (cooked ‘rare’) and french fries, and their new Truffled Lentil and Tomato Pasta Millefeuille. We finished the meal with a trio of sorbet and their signature Pistachio Souffle.

I like to try a range of food when I visit somewhere and the menu is long and delicious so it was really hard to choose! The mezze platter and the Millefeuille dish both happen to be vegan, and the latter in particular was really tasty. The cashew nut cream sauce, balsamic reduction and sprinkling of hazelnuts added to the pasta dish with their creamy/crunchy/sharp textures and flavours… it was so much more than ‘vegan lasagne’.

Steak often appear on many restaurant menus and we often choose it as its a great way to compare a restaurant’s ability to source quality meat and to know how to cook them well. Happily I can report that this steak was a lovely, large cut of meat, salted well and cooked to perfection.

My husband has visited Brasserie Blanc a couple of times with work and always has the Pistachio Souffle to finish. His verdict… ‘the best dessert in Bournemouth!’ – high praise indeed! My trio of sorbets were the delicious and local Jude’s ice cream and were also the perfect sweet finish to my meal (I was too full to try much more!).

Brasserie Blanc also have a Christmas Party Menu as well as an indulgent 4 course Christmas Day menu if you were looking for something for the festive period. They also have a children’s menu for young children, as well as offering to make half portions of the A La Carte menu for older children or teenagers. They have a Sunday menu with some roast options if you have had a Sunday stroll along the beach and are looking for somewhere to warm up.

It was a Monday night in early October when we visited but the restaurant was busy and vibrant with people clearly having a lovely time. I could hear hotel guests happily saying to the staff ‘see you for dinner tomorrow’ so despite the range of restaurants close by, they were clearly happy to choose another tasty dish from their new menu… and I have to admit to also wondering how I can visit again soon.
