Review of BigWigs Bakery in Tuckton
I have seen many tempting pictures of the bakes coming out of BigWigs Bakery but never managed to time my trips to Tuckton to be able to get something for myself… then I spotted an instagram picture of their bacon maple donut and I quickly made an excuse to go!
So keen to arrive, I managed to be there 15 minutes before they opened and with already a queue forming, I knew I must be in the right place. BigWigs Bakery opened mid-pandemic and added a much needed artisan bakery to the bustling Tuckton high street. I am already a fan of Neal & Son Butchers and The Fry Inn fish and chip takeaway, so this is now one more reason to visit.
Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good, handmade donut (my favourite food!) so I already knew I was going to try their donuts but their little bakery is PACKED with other tempting bakes… from a wide selection of handmade breads (which they are happy to slice for you if you would like them to), a range of sweet bakes and patisserie, as well as delicious looking hot or cold pastries and sausage rolls in a range of tasty flavours. They also have some local deli products.
I think their range of donuts change daily and today they had double glazed, homemade raspberry jam filled, vanilla cream, chocolate and a salted caramel donut. I chose 4 (I knew my husband and kids would not be happy if I didn’t get them one too!). I also bought a granary sourdough loaf for lunch.
I ate the double glazed donut (both sugared and with icing!) and I have to say that it was one of the best donuts I have ever had. A good layer of icing (but not overwhelming), crunchy sugar and an ever so slightly greasy edge to the soft donut that is somehow both soft and crispy …and the symbol of a realy good, freshly made donut.
My nearly 16 year old had the raspberry jam donut. He is notoriously both equal part fussy with food and opinionated (!) but he shares my love of donuts so I was keen for his opinion too. He really appreciated that it was real jam in the centre and like me, loved the freshness of the dough and the abundantly sugared outside. His conclusion… ‘better than Krispy Kreme’ – high praise!
When I asked about the donuts in the store, I was assured that they were available every day as their customers just love them… and I can see why!
The granary sourdough loaf was also really lovely – great texture and the addition of the granary flour really added to the flavour. I usually like a seeded loaf but love the texture and tang of a sourdough, and this was the best of both. I had a BLT sandwich at home but it would work really well with something like smashed avocado on top too.
If you are looking for some delicious, handmade sweet or savoury bakes then I highly recommend BigWigs Bakery. Their staff were very smiley and friendly, answering my questions and offering suggestions. I would try and get there early if you are after something in particular as from the time I arrived to the time I left (I went to the post office in between), there was always a steady queue outside!
The question is though… now that I have found then perhaps the best donuts in Dorset, how am I going to resist visiting every day!?

All bakes were fully paid for and BigWigs Bakery did not know I was going to write a review.
